CHICAGO PRIZE COMPETITION The INTERCHANGE promotes the overlap of various public and private functions involving rest and motion. A series of continuous and intertwining layers elevated above the Kennedy Expressway merge the paths, speeds, and activities of the automobile, the bus, the bicycle, and the runner. The INTERCHANGE derives from the different layers of circulation. Car and bicycle parking are elevated through a series of continuously sloping and connecting ramps. Along the edges of Madison Street and Monroe Street the park is accessible at street level and then folds into an elevated plane situated above the bus terminal along Desplaines Street. Buses slip underneath this landscape and queue along a ramp parallel to the park and adjacent retail areas. The elevated plane is part of a larger landscape of open park space hovering over the Expressway. The edges of the park along the north-south axis of the site erode to reveal the Expressway and planted trees below. The park serves as a gateway to all functions within the INTERCHANGE. |
