PRIVATE RESIDENCE
COLUMBIA COUNTY, NEW YORK

Initial schemes used the existing foundation, now a sunken courtyard, as an organizing element around which the house unfolds. The new 1,600sq.ft.house is conceived as a linear element that (stretches out/opens out to views of the ponds and connects into the existing foundation. Curving fieldstone walls, commonly used in the region as property line boundaries, anchor the “private” side of the house into the hill, and shift (pull apart) to form the house’s entry. On the interior, warm wood cladding is punctuated by large window openings carefully calibrated to the views and light of the site.
